Gila Cliff Dwellings, N.M.
Getting to the Cliff Dwellings is a real adventure.  The sign just north of Silver City, NM says "Cliff Dwellings 2 hours!"  It is about 40 miles from anywhere over hilly, twisty roads.
These caves were inhabited from the 1280s to the 1300s by Indians of the Mogollon culture.
We were fortunate in having longtime friends Gordon and Frances Hill as our private tour guides.  The Hills spent the summer volunteering as National Park guides in the Gila National Forest.
You can step inside several caves here.
Many hummingbirds reside at the Visitors Center.
