Hot Air Ballooning Over Cappadocia
This was our 7th hot air balloon trip. It now is also our favorite ride. The terrain that the balloon flys over is incredible..the volcanic shapes that form Cappadocia and the Goreme (See more Goreme images elsewhere on this feature. Balloon rides always begin early. We were up at 4:30 AM for this one. It is usually cold and the length of the ride depends upon the winds. This one lasted almost two hours..a nice long trip.
Our pilot dipped the balloon down low so that we could get a great view of the rock chapels in the Goreme Open Air Museum as well as the mysterious shapes of the rock formations on the ground.
These were the largest balloons that we had ever flown. They each held twenty people comfortably. I have been asked if this was a balloon festival since there were so many balloons in the air (We counted 23!). The answer is no. This is a normal day for the operators in Cappadocia.
The pilot also gets the award for best landing. We were surprised when he landed the balloon perfectly on the back of the trailer. Usually the balloon lands on the ground before it is loaded onto the trailer. The event always concludes with a champagne toast and presentation of certificates.
